A Designers Guide to Adobe InDesign and XML or Adobe Acrobat 7 PDF Bible

A Designer's Guide to Adobe InDesign and XML

Author: Jim Maivald

A Designers Guide to InDesign and XML is an introduction to XML tagging and how it works. The technology is broken down into its essential parts, explaining what XML is and how it works in plain English.

XML is a markup language, a close cousin to HTML. While HTML is used to format text for display, XML is used to tag or identify data. By “marking up” the data users can then transfer or repurpose it from one application to another. This ability to repurpose is XML’s key advantage over most other technologies. And, because XML was built for the Web, it offers the promise of moving data from print to the Internet and back again with the push of a button.

The guide includes 10 real world projects with an aim toward users working with increasing confidence and skill to incorporate XML into their daily workflow. The projects include:

  • Business card: How to create a structured layout in InDesign and import XML. Get text to format automatically and then flow into multiple examples.
  • Product catalog: Learn how to import XML data into a structured layout using nested styles and cloned text.
  • Magazine and newspaper: Tag and export magazine-style publications for Web distribution.
  • SML and XSL: Transform XML into XHTML for use on the Web in Dreamweaver and GoLive.
  • XML and CSS: Use Cascading Style Sheets with your exported XML.

Windows Server 2003 in 24 Hours or How to Do Everything with Google Tools

Windows Server 2003 in 24 Hours

Author: Habraken

Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows Server 2003 in 24 Hours is a straightforward, step-by-step introduction to Microsoft's newest network operating system. This book not only highlights the functions and capabilities of the software, but also provides a practical hands-on look at important server features and tools. After reading this book you will have all of the information you need to get a Windows domain up and running quickly and easily.

Library Journal

Microsoft's April launch of Windows Server 2003 signaled a newer, modular strategy; the company intends to continue delivering additional components for at least six months postlaunch. This means that libraries, though needing to invest in guides to the new server OS, may need to upgrade more quickly than in the past for coverage of newer components. These four titles will help start the collection. Intended for Windows Server 2000 administrators who need to update their skills, Delta Guide eschews the basics for changes in the new OS, beginning with selecting an edition and moving through interface and policy changes, security enhancements, new command line tools, and more. Online sidebars bring users up to speed in areas where their Win2k knowledge is lacking. Buy in conjunction with more thorough guides that also address the needs of beginning administrators. Beginner's Guide and Teach Yourself target beginning administrators, teaching via step-by-step chapters. In Beginner's, the notes and "Ask the Expert" sidebars add useful info, progress checks mid-chapter help break up lengthy prose, and projects and mastery checks close chapters. Teach ends chapters with a summary and Q&A and includes similar notes and asides, falling somewhat short in explaining what to do when its step-by-step instructions fail. Beginner's, for example, goes by degrees through setting up nonplug and play printers, while Teach merely directs readers to the Add Printer Wizard. Both are good bets for all libraries. Meanwhile, Unleashed is a comprehensive reference for intermediate to advanced administrators. Lists of best practices contain tips to keep servers running smoothly, along with rules and recommendations integrated into each chapter; larger libraries can consider. Matrix Preconditioning Techniques and Applications or Joy of SOX

Matrix Preconditioning Techniques and Applications

Author: Ke Chen

Preconditioning techniques have emerged as an essential part of successful and efficient iterative solutions of matrices. Ke Chen's book offers a comprehensive introduction to these methods. A vast range of explicit and implicit sparse preconditioners are covered, including the conjugate gradient, multi-level and fast multi-pole methods, matrix and operator splitting, fast Fourier and wavelet transforms, incomplete LU and domain decomposition, Schur complements and approximate inverses. In addition, aspects of parallel realization using the MPI are discussed. Very much a users-guide, the book provides insight to the use of these techniques in areas such as acoustic wave scattering, image restoration and bifurcation problems in electrical power stations. Supporting MATLAB files are available from the Web to support and develop readers' understanding, and provide stimulus for further study. Pitched at graduate level, the book is intended to serve as a useful guide and reference for students, computational practitioners, engineers and researchers alike.

Joy of SOX: Why Sarbanes-Oxley and Services Oriented Architecture May be the Best Thing That Ever Happened to You

Author: Hugh Taylor

• The Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) was passed in 2002 in response to a series of high-profile corporate scandals and requires that public companies implement internal controls over financial reporting, operations, and assets; these controls depend heavily on installing or improving information technology and business methods

• Written by one of the most visible personalities on the tech-biz side of the SOX discussion, this highly readable, engaging book provides a clear road map for integrating SOX compliance into the fabric of everyday IT infrastructure and business practice

• Shows the reader how to leverage and use service-oriented architecture (SOA), a set of technologies that enables interoperation of heterogeneous computer systems, to achieve the level of internal controls over IT that SOX mandates
